The upper floor of Dunrobin Castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of Margaret, daughter of the 14th Earl of Sutherland in the 17th Century.
Margaret fell in love with a man her father considered unsuitable. Her father locked Margaret in the attic of Dunrobin Castle whilst he arranged for a more suitable marriage.
Her maid helped in her escape, arranging for her lover to wait at the bottom of the Castle with a horse whilst she smuggled a rope to Margaret. As Margaret was climbing out of the window her father entered the chamber and discovered the plot. Margaret was so frightened that she lost her grip on the rope and fell to her death.
Her ghost still haunts Dunrobin Castle, weeping for her lover, who placed a curse on the Earl, in revenge for the death of Margaret.
